Artist's Comments

Deep within the confines of Hollow Fields lies the Remnant Room, the place where all the failed clockwork and steam projects created by countless students over the years are left to rust. Recently, however, some of the brighter children have made this abandoned place their secret hideout from the prying eyes of the Engineers. Entry to this exclusive club is restricted only to the brightest and best students; and when Lucy Snow finds herself on the wrong side of the club's purple-haired leader, Summer Polanski, she discovers that the Remnant Room may well end up being her tomb!

Here's the first image in a series of Steampunk-inspired works based on my manga. Hollow Fields volume 1 will be out in June 2007 from Seven Seas Entertainment. Go check it out - Hollow Fields is still running online there, updated three times a week!

Crits are encouraged, so feel free to recommend changes/suggestions if you see them! (In particular, suggestions for what to do with the white background. I've always been bad at picking bg colours.)

SlyDante said this: "Simply put,The Remnant Room by ~Clockwork7 blew me away when I first saw it. The cool character designs, the wicked color scheme, the staggering amount of detail, the nice style, & the sweet story behind it all that helps it give out that unique Harry Potter-meets-steampunk feel even more...It just all combines to make one stylish, fun, & intriguing piece of work that definitely deserves way more attention from the community." I thought that summed up my thoughts as well =) (Suggested by *SlyDante and Featured by `guruubii)

Neat. I love the coloring and the whole layout of the image!
I wouldn't have a clue what to do about the white background...aside from leave it as it is?
There are a few other artists who had similar layouts that were still effective with white. Have a look at the deviant Rannsama (though you may have to delve into their gallery).

Awesome work! ^^

I have to agree with Fidelus28, I think that the white background looks fine as is. It provides a strong contrast between the picture components. What ideas or thoughts did you have about the background- was there anything that you considered? What effect are you trying to acheive with the background, or what emotion do you want to evoke?

The only other issue I see is Lucy's run- the more extreme motion in her upper torso (and the fabric movement) is somewhat in contradiction to the motion of her legs- they're sorta splayed apart, rather than in a running form. Is that intentional?

I really like the way you've drawn the clothing and fabric in this scene- it all looks so natural. Your use of foreshortening and perspective is exceptional. Great work on Summer's pose, and her costuming.

I like the colors and shading that you've used in this pic- the tones you've chosen are particularly effective. Great work, overall!

For the background I would say black or a metallic color. Light grey might work too? Really it's hard to say if you can't actually see the image with the bg color applied. Just keep going through shades of grey until you feel comfortable with one. Leaving it white does give it that "incomplete" feeling :( I dunno any color that would work besides grey unless it was a blue-ish or brown-ish grey.

Aghhh, it's going...ahh, my brain is going out the window, that's how it's going. Thanks! :D

Thanks for the crit. I did consider a gradient for the background, but nothing I tried seemed to make the picture stand out as much as the white...and yet I feel it's wrong. Maybe I'm just fussy.

You're right about Lucy's legs - I drew them a bit impulsively, and they do bend a bit too oddly. In the sense of it being a manga image, I don't mind too much, but if it's too noticable when I print the picture, I'll change them.

Thanks a bunch!

Arrgh, I probably shouldn't have spent so much time on this, but I'm bad like that...:p The doomy dooms are actually children in scary masks...I think kids in scary masks are scarier than monsters anyday...brrr, kids....

You're right, it is hard to know what to do unless you try it. I actually did try a blue-grey background - it just messed around with the colours of the top figure's dress too much. And flat grey was too flat - may as well be white. Ahhh, curse my indecision! I'm sure I'll think of something. But something about the white feels 'incomplete' to me too. Anyway, thanks! ^_^
